Our Gardens

Living Pollinator Habitats

Surrounding the Kimmel Education and Research Center, you’ll find 17 beautifully revitalized landscape beds, redesigned in 2024 to showcase sustainable gardening practices and serve as a vibrant living classroom. These beds feature a rich mix of perennials, ornamental grasses, and pollinator-friendly native plants, each selected to thrive in Nebraska’s climate while supporting biodiversity.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Kimmel staff, interns, and Nebraska Extension professionals, the gardens were officially recognized in 2024 as a Nebraska Certified Pollinator Habitat. This designation highlights our commitment to creating healthy, functional spaces for bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and other essential pollinators—whose work is critical to food production, ecosystem health, and plant reproduction.

Beyond their ecological value, the gardens are a place for exploration, education, and inspiration. Whether you're strolling the grounds, attending a field trip, or joining us for a seasonal workshop, these beds demonstrate how horticulture, conservation, and community learning can grow hand in hand. Interpretive signage and evolving seasonal displays make each visit a new opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect with nature.

At Kimmel Orchard, our gardens reflect more than beauty—they represent the power of research, stewardship, and hands-on learning in action.
